In der Zukunft sind die Grenzen zwischen der digitalen und physischen Welt verschwommen. In diesen beiden Welten verschmelzen Mensch und Maschine und formen eine neue Art kybernetischer Existenz. Zwischen diesen Welten kämpfen Motoko Kusanagi und die Offiziere von Sektion 9 zusammen mit den tödlichen Tachikoma-Robotern gegen die Aktivitäten beider Unterwelten.
